One of the best weekend getaways, Lake George, is nestled in the upstate region of New York.

Growing up in Saratoga Springs, my favorite weekend getaway was always the nearby village of Lake George, NY. From the age of 9, I spent my summers on Lake George at Camp Chingachgook.

Some of my fondest memories of summer are my trips to this sparkling lake, which is home to over 170 beautiful islands. many of which are campgrounds.

Although some of the reason I love this place comes from my fond childhood memories, it’s still one of the most sought after summer destinations on the East coast.

Known as the "Queen of American Lakes", it is a must-visit destination, especially in the summer. Lake George has a marvelous history, and has been the essential upstate New York summer getaway, for centuries.

Visiting Lake George is perfect for any type of traveler and any budget. With luxury resorts to plenty of campgrounds, and even Airbnb’s, there is something for everyone in Lake George.

Lake George is located in the beautiful Adirondack Mountains, just a few hours north of New York City and stone’s throw from Lake Placid and Montreal, making it an easy getaway for city dwellers.

Things to do in Lake George are parasailing, ziplining and hiking

History of Lake George

Lake George has had many names over the years, Andia-ta-roc-te by the Native Americans who first inhabited the area, and later named Lac du St. Sacrement by the first white man to see the lake in 1646. It wasn’t until 1962 that this small town in Warren County, New York was named “Lake George”.

Lake George played a role during the “French and Indian War” during the 1700’s, and it wasn’t until the 1800’s that Lake George began to grow due to the beauty of the area.

Now there are many things to do in Lake George and the surrounding areas. The area is most popular in the summer from May through September, but Lake George still offers exciting things to do year-round.

Best Things to Do in Lake George

Lake George has so much to offer. A beautiful lakeside village, gorgeous mountains, island rentals, camping, and of course–– the beautiful lake! There is so much to experience in the area, but below are some of my favorites ways to spend your next weekend getaway and the best things to do in Lake George

Parasailing on the Lake

Things to do in Lake George, New York, include parasailing and ziplining

Parasailing is the perfect way to experience Lake George, and a phenomenal way to take in the incredible scenery from the lake. Recently I went out with Pinky’s Parasailing Adventures, based in the Lake George Village.

I love a good adventure on my travels, and the parasailing ride certainly didn’t disappoint! Being hoisted into the air will be sure to send a rush of adrenaline through the veins of even the most daring adventurers.

Pinky’s Parasailing Adventures is known for specializing in tandem’s and triples, making it the perfect parasailing company for groups. Once up in the air, you will be met with the most spectacular views, and be able to see Lake George from an exciting new vantage point. The views you catch from up above are sure to be unforgettable.

One of my favorite parts about soaring with Pinky’s, I personally think they have the prettiest parasails on the lake, which means better instagram photos!

Ziplining

Things to do in Lake George, ziplines.

This is no ordinary zipline! The adventure begins with a bumpy and exciting jeep ride up a dusty path to the top of this epic zipline. The Eagle Flyer Zipline is no ordinary zipline, this zipline is faster, higher, and more exciting than most ziplines in the US.

This zip-line will make you feel like a soaring eagle while you fly over the tree-tops of the Adirondack mountains. The 1,000 feet vertical drop at 50 mph will have your adrenaline pumping, leaving you wanting more, so you may want to purchase a second ride before heading up!

I recommend two trips on this exciting zip-line. The first time down is perfect for getting your heart racing, adrenaline pumping, and enjoying the experience. The second trip down is when I would recommend snapping photos or GoPro footage, if you plan to take photos.

There are so many adventurous things to do in Lake George, but this zip-line shouldn’t be missed on your visit.

Hiking the Adirondacks

Known for the 46 high peaks (each over 4,000 in elevation), the Adirondack mountains are some of the most majestic in the world. Even if you aren't an avid hiker, there are plenty of effortless hikes with big pay-offs when it comes to views from the top. Some of the best easy hikes (with best views) are Sleeping Beauty, Pinnacle, and Buck Mountain!

If you are a big hiker and live nearby, you can even challenge yourself to top all of the 46 high peaks in the area. After doing so, you will be considered an official Adirondack Forty-Sixer. That’s a little more hiking than I enjoy, but definitely would give you bragging rights!

No matter which hike you choose in Lake George, you will be guaranteed breathtaking views!

Boating and Camping on Lake George

One of the incredibly unique things about Lake George are all of the islands while boating. Many of the islands can be rented in the summer for day or overnight usage.  There are so many things to do in Lake George, but getting out onto the lake is a must!

Exploring Fort William Henry

If you are a history enthusiast, one thing to do in Lake George is to visit the historic Fort William Henry. Fort William Henry was a British fort during the mid 1700’s. The fort is at the southern end of Lake George, and is one of the most significant landmarks in the area.

Six Flags: Great Escape

If you love amusement parks, one thing you will enjoy in Lake George is the theme park Great Escape. One of the most iconic rides at Great Escape is the Comet– widely known as one of the best wooden roller coasters in the world.

Mini Golf

There are so many places to get outside and enjoy weather in Lake George if you are visiting in the summer. One of my favorite things to do in Lake George in the evenings is to play a few rounds of mini golf with friends. There are so many mini golf spots, you will be sure to find one that fits your personality. Two longstanding favorites in town are Goony Golf, and Pirate Cove Adventures.

With so many things to do in Lake George, it’s a superb destination for day trips, as well as weekend trips. If you visit for the weekend you will needs a place to stay…

Where to Stay in Lake George

Things to do in Lake George, include relaxing at the Sagamore Hotel on the Lake.

The most famous Lake George hotel is the historic Sagamore resort and hotel. The Sagamore resort is located on the West side of Lake George in Bolton Landing. This historic hotel was originally built in 1883, and it is still one of the gems of Lake George. The Victorian architecture is eye-catching, and captivates every visitor on the lake.

This is one of my favorite places to spend time while visiting the Lake George area. The old world charm, fantastic service, and relaxing atmosphere will be sure to make your visit to Lake George a delight!

For an extra-special stay, check out the King Balcony rooms. Stepping out onto the balcony to sip your morning coffee, while watching the passing boats disrupt the glassy waters of Lake George is a magical way to begin your day.

Where to Dine in Lake George

One of the best things to do in Lake George is to explore new places to eat!

The Pavilion at The Sagamore - Located at my favorite property in the area, thid spot is great for a beautiful lakeside dinner. Enjoy dinner next to the water, while watching the sun melt behind the Adirondack mountain range. Absolutely a must for a summer evening in Lake George.

Caffe Vero - This spot is excellent for breakfast all day, which is perfect when you are on vacation or a weekend getaway! They have an incredible cinnamon french toast, that is a must-try when visiting Lake George!

New Way Lunch- There isn’t a lot of times that I would recommend a hot dog over a higher-end lunch, but a hot dog with “The Works” at New Way Lunch is necessary every time I’m in the area. There isn’t a location directly in Lake George Village, but there are 3 locations in the area– be sure to check one out.
