The Ultimate Guide to Phuket Thailand & The Phuket Sandbox

Thailand is by far one of my favorite countries, and a place I return to again and again.

Phuket, is a popular spot in Thailand amongst travelers in Southeast Asia and all around the world, and it’s easy to see why. It boasts gorgeous beaches, dramatic rock formations, and vibrant nightlife.

With a little something for everyone, it’s no wonder Phuket attracts so many visitors every year. Whether you’re after a laid-back and luxurious holiday or an exploration of culture and cuisine, Phuket will guarantee a good time.

To help you navigate and plan the best Phuket travel itinerary for your specific travel style, here’s the ultimate guide to visiting Phuket.

Is Phuket Open to Travelers?

Considering the unusual travel circumstances of the world, the number one question you probably have today is “what are the requirements to visit Phuket, Thailand?”

The short answer: Thailand is currently open to vaccinated travelers.

The long answer? That’s where we’ll dive into the details of Phuket’s Sandbox program.

How Phuket’s Sandbox Program Works

First and foremost, you need to be fully vaccinated no less than 14-days prior to your travels to Phuket. Next, there’s a list of paperwork and tasks you need to complete in order to qualify for the Sandbox program, such as:

  1. Proof of vaccination (such as a vaccination QR code or your CDC card)

  2. An RT-PCR COVID test before your arrival to Phuket

  3. COVID-19 Insurance

  4. Certificate of Entry (COE) or a Thailand Pass issued by the Thai Embassy or Consulate

  5. Pre-paid RT-PCR COVID-19 tests in Phuket

Aside for these 5 requirements, there are some important things you should take note of about the Sandbox program. For instance, you must stay at a Sandbox hotel approved hotel where the staff are required to be fully vaccinated, and must comply to updated safety standards and protocols.

Now, if you’re planning to spend 7 days or more in Phuket, you’ll be eligible for all domestic travel within Thailand. But if you’re spending less time in Phuket, you’ll have to fly out of Phuket to an international destination. On my most recent visit with the Sandbox program, the quarantine was 14 days, however it has since dropped— which is very exciting for travelers looking to explore other parts of Thailand.

Why This is the Best Time to Travel to Phuket

Phuket’s Sandbox program might sound like a bit of a hassle, but trust me when I say it’s worth it. First of all, it’s a great program to ensure your safety abroad so that you can stay healthy while protecting the communities around you as well.

Second, this is a great opportunity to experience Phuket’s wonders and some of the world’s most iconic beaches without the hoards of tourists. Imagine being one of the only people at some of Thailand’s most iconic locations!

Once travel picks back up in full swing, you won’t be able to see these beaches without large crowds. So if rest and relaxation is your goal, this is the best time to visit Phuket.

Where to Stay in Phuket, Thailand

You didn’t travel all this way to not be right along the pristine shoreline of Phuket. Here are the best places to stay in Phuket, Thailand, that will promise you five-star luxury, gorgeous beach views, and utmost comfort.

The Shore at Katathani

Want your very own pool villa sanctuary tucked away in the hidden cliff sides of Phuket? The Shore at Katathani is the spot for you. The Shore offers sweeping views of the azure waters of Kata Noi beach.

Each room at these five-star villas comes with a personal swimming pool and picture-perfect panoramic views of the sugary white sand that stretches along Kata Noi beach.

There are also a number of facilities for your utmost comfort and convenience from 6 on-site restaurants, a luxurious spa, and recreational facilities like a tennis court and games room.

Anantara Mai Khao

Anantara Mai Khao is another luxurious option located on the northern tip of Phuket. You also won’t have a shortage of stunning views as it is situated along the stretch of the beach and the lush greenery of a nearby national park.

This resort will ensure a five-star private and secluded getaway worth every single penny. The property has 4 on-site restaurants in different settings including a treehouse and lagoon. Amenities include a spa and wellness center, private pools with your villa, a tennis court, a fitness room, and yoga, pilates, and Tai Chi sessions.

Both The Shore at Katathani and Anantara Mai Khao are both SHA+ approved (part of the Sandbox approved hotels in Phuket).

What to Do in Phuket, Thailand

Beyond the beautiful beaches, there are many reasons why you should visit Thailand. Here are the top attractions and best things to do to help you create the perfect Phuket itinerary, no matter what your travel style might be.

Order in a Floating Breakfast

Not technically the top attraction or major tourist site in Phuket, but trust me on this. A floating breakfast is the best way to kick off your morning. Especially in your own private pool at either Anantara or The Shore. Plus, this is the perfect low-energy activity to fend of the jet lag right after your arrival.

Enjoy the Views

Again, if you’re traveling to Phuket from the United States, you’ll be fighting off some major jet lag in the first few days. So why not take it easy and enjoy the views from from your hotel? And if you’re staying at either The Shore or Anantara, you won’t have a shortage of sweeping panoramic views to indulge.

Big Buddha

Once you’re feeling fresh and well-rested, it’s time to venture out and visit one of Phuket’s most iconic attractions - the 147 foot tall Big Buddha.

Located on Nakkerd Hills between Chalong and Kata, the viewpoint from the Big Buddha will treat you to panoramic views of Phuket town as well as the beaches and surrounding blue waters.

Go on a Waterfall Hike

The humid and tropical climate of Phuket makes it a great destination for chasing waterfalls. The most popular waterfall to visit is Kathu waterfall, which features a series of picturesque drop pools. The best time to visit? Right after rainfall. But watch out for slippery rocks and pathways if you’re planning your visit around Phuket’s rainy season.

Visit the Best Viewpoints in Phuket

The views from The Shore and Anantara are swoon-worthy, but once you beat jet lag, it’s time to get your Phuket views game to a whole new level. Some of the most photographic viewpoints in Phuket include Promthep Cape, Karon Viewpoint, and Windmill Viewpoint. And if you’re up for a strenuous but rewarding hike, hit up Radar Hill, which is said to be the highest viewpoint in all of Phuket.

Unwind at the Oasis Spa

After a few days hiking, chasing waterfalls, and climbing up steep inclines for panoramic views, it’s time to give your muscles a little break. The Oasis spa is the best spa I’ve been to outside of a hotel in Thailand (not just Phuket). So if you aren’t staying at a hotel in Phuket with an on-site spa and wellness center, I highly recommend booking a session at the Oasis Spa.

Have Tea at Chinpracha House in Traditional Baba Yaya Clothing

This mansion built in 1903 is the perfect setting to enjoy a spot of tea. The Chinpracha House is located in old town Phuket but it’s quietly tucked away from the heat of the street. Admire the Sino-colonial style architecture. And if you have th opportunity to don the elegant, colorful, and vibrant ttraditional Baba Yaya clothing, do it.

Dine at PRU (Michelin Star Restaurant)

While Thailand is known for its famous street food, dining at the Michelin Star restaurant, PRU, is absolutely worth every penny. PRU will provide a uniquely delicious meal using fresh ingredients that has been locally and responsibly sourced from local farmers and fishermen. PRU also caters to vegetarians, vegans, and gluten-free diets so you can enjoy a truly drool-worthy meal no matter what your dietary preferences are.

ATV Ride with ATV Phuket

An ATV ride is a great way to explore Phuket while fueling your adventurous spirit. Ride through rainforests, local villages, hidden beaches and beautiful waterfalls with ATV Phuket. There’s no prior experience needed for this safe and guided tour, and you have the option of riding for 1 to 3 hours total.

Go Scuba Diving with All4Diving

Thailand’s Andaman Sea is one of the world’s best dive spots. Phuket island is the perfect place to explore the depths of the ocean whether you’re scuba certified or not.

Diving in Phuket will reveal an underwater world filled with reefs, deep drop-offs, wrecks, caves, and tunnels. I mean, what better way to test out your technical skills, dive recreationally, or get PADI certified than in paradise?

Go Surfing

Phuket might not be on the “best places to go surfing” radar. However, it is the best place to catch some waves in Thailand. Phuket has a small but active surf community, so you’ll have access to affordable board rentals. Some of the best beaches to surf at include Kalim Beach, Kamala Beach, and Kata Beach.

Zipline Through the Rainforest

If you’re ready for an adrenaline rush-filled eco-adventure, go ziplining through the rainforest of Phuket. Soar high above huge ancient trees and vibrant tropical wildlife as you take in the scenery from up high. Explore Phuket from a unique vantage point through a variety of different ziplines that increase in height.

Have Custom Clothing Made at a Local Tailor

One of the things Phuket is most known for is their wide range of affordable tailor shops. So if you’d like to leave with a special (and useful) souvenir, I highly recommend having your own custom clothing made at a local tailor.

If you’re short on time and won’t have the ability to pick up your finished garment, most local tailors would offer to send your outfit to your address.

Take a Cocktail Workshop and Tour the Chalong Bay Rum Distillery

For my cocktail and spirit lovers, the Chalong Bay Rum Distillery is a must-visit when you find yourself in Phuket. Join a cocktail workshop where you’ll learn how to mix, stir, and shake cocktails from an experienced mixologist (another useful souvenir you get to bring home). You can also tour the distillery and learn how they craft their rum.

Strengthen Up with Muay Thai at Tiger Muay Thai

Normally, I wouldn’t recommend working out or hitting the gym on any travel itinerary. However, Phuket is home to Tiger Muay Thai - a prominent Muay Thai and mixed martial arts facility that has seen the likes of many UFC champions. Their day classes cater to all levels from beginners to advanced, so don’t be afraid to learn and discover some new moves.

Eat Local Street Food Market at Kalim Bay

Welcome to a foodie’s paradise. The local street food market at Kalim Bay has over 20 food carts, each cooking up something delicious and worth trying. Many locals frequent this food market in the evenings, so you know you’re in good company.

Enjoy an array of noodle soups, mango and sticky rice, different types of salads, and all the fresh tropical fruit you can dream of. Although they’re open for breakfast, hitting these markets at sunset will give you the most exciting and localized experience possible.

Go Island Hopping

Did you really visit Phuket if you didn’t go island hopping? Take a boat to Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island, and of course, the ever popular Koh Phi Phi. Under normal circumstances, these islands are teeming with flocks of tourists from day to night. But if you’d like to have these iconic islands all to yourself, there’s no better time to visit Phuket than right now.

What to Pack for Phuket, Thailand

The last step to a perfect trip to Phuket boils down to what you’re carrying in your luggage. To set you up for success, here are my absolute must-haves when it comes to packing for a trip to Phuket, Thailand.

Lightweight, Breathable Clothing

Phuket is hot and humid year-round. Your best bet here is to pack a selection of cotton t-shirts, shorts, and flowy, breathable dresses. Gym clothes like leggings might be another great option, especially if you’re planning on taking on a hike or two.

Footwear

A good pair of sneakers or hiking shoes is a great option. But don’t forget a pair of sandals for the beach!

Swimwear

You absolutely cannot forget your bathing suit when you’re planning a trip to Phuket. Whether you plan on island hopping, scuba diving, or enjoying a floating breakfast in your pool, a swimsuit will always come in handy on your trip.

Reef-Friendly Sunscreen and Other Acessories

Sunscreen is a must, especially if you burn easily. And if you plan on swimming in the ocean, I encourage you to pack a reef-friendly sunscreen. With that being said, don’t forget your sunglasses and sun hats at home.

Mosquito Repellent

There isn’t a shortage of mosquitos, especially around the islands. If you’d like to enjoy your vacation without an itchy bite or 10, I highly recommend packing a DEET insect repellent before your trip.

Medications

It’s always wise to come prepared. Ideally, you won’t have to use these medications, but you definitely do not want to be caught without them when you need them most. Be sure to pack anti-diarrhea medication, just in case you get hit with a case of traveler’s stomach. And if you’re prone to motion sickness, dramamine might be a great idea before boat, ATV, and tuk tuk rides.
