The Ultimate Guide to Conejo Valley

Of course, I’m always drawn to international destinations when choosing where to travel but living in Southern California has its benefits. I don’t always have to go far to find new and exciting destinations. I recently had the chance to spend some time in Southern California’s Conejo Valley and I couldn’t wait to write about all the great things to see and do in Conejo Valley.

Where is Conejo Valley?

Conejo Valley is just 40 minutes from Los Angeles, but it has such a different vibe that makes it a great weekend getaway from LA. The main cities of Conejo Valley are Thousand Oaks and Agoura Hills, just west of Calabasas. While Conejo Valley is an easy day trip from Los Angeles, I highly recommend making an overnight trip so you can really enjoy all that there is to offer. With 16 hotels in Conejo Valley, it’s easy to plan an overnight stay so you’re not rushed through these Conejo Valley attractions.

What to Do in Conejo Valley

I only had a few days in Conejo Valley, so I could definitely plan another trip to see more because there are tons of great things to see and do when you visit. From wineries to movie sets, shopping and dining, these are a few of the best things to do in Conejo Valley.

Whizin Market Square is an amazing little plaza with lots of fun boutiques, antique shops, cafes, and restaurants. There’s also a live music venue with a fun calendar of concerts. Don’t miss this adorable Conejo Valley destination during your trip!

Conejo Valley Brewery & Winery Trail

Between Thousand Oaks and Agoura Hills, there are over a dozen breweries and wineries along the Conejo Valley Brewery & Winery Trail. Foodies and wine or beer enthusiasts can easily plan an entire itinerary around these stops.

Tarantula Hill Brewing Company in Thousand Oaks was a fun stop between activities; they serve flights of beer in little 3-ounce servings, so you can try a bunch of them and find some you like. In addition to premium craft beer, they also have artisan food, including handmade ice cream.

Heaven’s Hill Estate sits on a gorgeous property in Agoura Hills; it’s immediately obvious why they call it Heaven’s Hill. This spiritual retreat center and family-owned vineyard specialize in the production of Napa-quality wine. We enjoyed a private wine tasting at the estate and I can only imagine how amazing an overnight spiritual retreat would be! It would be the perfect spot for a girlfriend's getaway, a family reunion, or a wedding weekend.

Halo Salt Spa is the perfect spot for some downtime between the attractions of Conejo Valley. This Thousand Oaks day spa offers salt sessions in a room with Himalayan sea salt and salty air; it’s super relaxing and is supposed to be really good for your body. A single session in the salt room starts at just $25, so it’s not just super relaxing, it’s also very affordable.

Horseback Riding at Paramount Ranch was one of my favorite activities in Conejo Valley. This National Park Service site has been featured in tons of classic TV shows and movies. I joined Malibu Riders for a one-hour trail ride around the ranch. It’s a great way to spend some time outside in nature and see a part of Hollywood history.

Where to Eat in Conejo Valley

From Whizin Market Square to local wineries and everything in between, I found a ton of tasty places to eat in Conejo Valley.

  • For a healthy breakfast, the Juice Ranch is the perfect option. They have fresh juices, smoothies, and light, healthy food options.

  • Jinky’s Cafe has hearty breakfast options like my favorite California staple, Huevos Rancheros. So good!

  • I had a tasty tamarind margarita at Plata Taqueria and Cantina in Whizin Market Square. They have traditional and non-traditional Mexican dishes made from scratch each day.

  • The food and drinks at Decker Kitchen are unbelievably good; they have an extensive menu of cocktails and spirits as well as Sunday brunch and dinner. I had one of the largest burgers I’ve ever had…it was so good!

  • I also had a fantastic meal at the Malibu Cafe; it was like a little oasis in the valley. I had a kale caesar salad, prosciutto toast, and shishito peppers. Delish!

  • Whizin Square’s Blue Table has a really beautiful, illuminated bar. I had a wine-tasting and charcuterie board at this adorable spot in Agoura Hills.

Getting to Conejo Valley

Getting to Conejo Valley from Los Angeles is so easy! Thousand Oaks and Agoura Hills are both right off the 101, or you can take the scenic route up Highway One and then cut through the Santa Monica Mountains to reach Conejo Valley. It’s typically only about an hour from LA, depending on traffic, of course! I’m definitely adding this Southern California destination to my list of weekend getaways from LA!
